Redwing Ceramics

All of my work is thoughtfully and lovingly handmade by me - a real live human - from porcelain and stoneware clays by hand in a garden studio in sometimes-sunny, often-damp, rural West Berkshire, England. All perfectly imperfect pieces are uniquely crafted as one-offs to encourage personality. There's beauty in imperfection and having items that are truly handmade. What you are buying isn't a mass produced, forced labour product.

I am Jo Brass, the maker, adding my stamp 'JMB' to each handmade piece. I love playing with squishy, messy clay and turning it into something useful and (hopefully) beautiful, just using my hands and some basic tools.

My work is inspired by seascapes and sub-tropical flora of my homeland (New Zealand), and the textures, colours and plants of the British woodland I live surrounded by.

I love to handbuild, alter thrown forms and to give them rich surface treatments. I am interested in various techniques to enable me to draw on clay; I make my own transfers using powdered stains or using screen printing techniques and combine them with mishima work, cuerda seca glazing and paper resist methods. I can't resist experimenting with new glazes or trying different ways of layering familiar ones.

I find working in the studio compelling because it takes 100% of my focus.  It is impossible for me to work in my studio AND think about my outside worries at the same time.  I take enormous pleasure in the process of making.

I hope my work finds a home with someone who clicks with it and who will find joy in using it every day.
